When focusing the image through the EVF seems to brighten & pixelate. What is happening here?

When the camera presents Live View on the LCD or in the EVF, we use a sensor mode that delivers images with a high frame rate. However, this is not fast enough when performing contrast detection AF. Therefore, we need to switch to a lower resolution mode that delivers with a much higher frame rate. The resolutions is clearly enough for the AF function, but you will see a slightly more pixelated image during AF scan. We also brighten the image to improve data quality for the algorithms during AF scan.
